T&H Lemont Delivers New "Dual Capacity" High Frequency Quick-Change Welded Tube Mill

NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Dissemination

January 2010

Countryside, Il---T&H Lemont has recently commissioned a new (WU35M/WU60M-12) Dual Capacity, Quick Change Tube Mill System. This mill will produce standard mechanical rounds as well as hollow structural shapes.

The Dual Capacity Tube Mill System was developed by T&H Lemont in conjunction with Searing Industries of Rancho Cucamonga, CA.  Searing Industries approached T&H Lemont with the need to increase production of a wide range of structural products in a limited production area.  The Dual Capacity Mill allows for a greater range of production sizes in a minimal amount of floor space.  In effect, the Dual Capacity Mill gives a pipe and tube producer the ability to produce a range of pipe and tubing normally produced from TWO DIFFERENT SIZED MILLS.

With a Dual Capacity Mill, the entire entry and exit equipment are designed to be universal; as are the mill bases and drive systems. The “dual capacity” of a mill is achieved by two different size sets of Quick Change subplates designed to mount on a single base system and utilize a universal drive system. One set of subplate mounted driven stands (T&H Model WU35M-12) with 3.500” shafts was designed for producing tubing from 1.250” to 5.000” with wall thickness from .095” to .250”.  The second set of subplates with 6.000” shafts (T&H Model WU60M-12) was designed to produce tubing from 2.500” to 8.000” diameter with wall thickness from .125” to .500”.  The distance between the stands was optimized for the products produced on each set of subplates.  Each set of subplates included three driven squaring clusters to form the shapes.  Production was increased and change-over times minimized by the T&H AutoSet automatic stand adjusting system.  This motorized, programmable system allows the operator to make “push-button” roll stand gauge changes.

Additionally, this mill was designed to utilize an overhead crane system to assist in the change out of the subplates.  The subplates are held to the base by a special hydraulic clamping system.  This allows the subplates to be connected rigidly and precisely to the mill base and when necessary, disconnected from the base quickly and efficiently.

T&H Lemont AutoSet Roll Stand Adjustment

NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Dissemination

January 2009

Chicago, Il---T&H Lemont will introduce new Mill set-up automation system available for retrofit of any existing mill.  The system will utilize patented absolute encoder technology to achieve repeatable, highly accurate setups.

A color touch screen interface is used to select mill setup from a menu of product specifications. These specifications are based on previously stored setups. The operator will enter an ID specific to the pipe or tube size. The screen will show nominal rim gaps in addition to actual rim gaps as entered from previous production of that size tubing. The stands will automatically adjust to those locations at the touch of the screen. Each stand is represented on the touch screen. If minor adjustments are required, the operator can make these adjustments from the touch screen in .001” increments. Once the best setup is achieved, the data can be stored as the new product specification. The system is capable of storing 100+ unique mill setups.

The absolute encoders retain position information with “power off” and never require a “zero-out” procedure.  For example, if an adjustment is made manually while the system is shut down, at “power on” the system will recognize the new position. In place of expensive servo motor drives, the system features standard AC Vector drives to replace manual adjustment of the driven stands. Because T&H Lemont uses industry standard technology, the system represents an unprecedented value.  The system includes as standard an Ethernet interface and web server for optional data acquisition.

Benefits of the system include faster set-up and reduced material waste due to set-up errors during start-up.  A complete mill adjustment can be accomplished automatically without the use of hand tools. Once one section of the mill has been retrofitted, this scalable system can be expanded at low incremental costs.

T&H Lemont Delivers New “Dual Capacity” High Frequency Quick-Change Welded Tube Mill

NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Dissemination

December 2008

Chicago, Il---T&H Lemont has recently delivered a new Dual Capacity Quick Change Tube Mill System. The Dual Capacity Tube Mill Systems were developed to handle the increasing demands for "just in time" deliveries of welded tubular products. The Dual Capacity Mill will allow for a greater range of production diameters in a minimum amount of floor space. In effect, the Dual Capacity Mill gives the tubing producer the ability to produce a range of tubing normally produced on two mills. It also represents a smaller initial investment to produce a larger range of tubing diameters. With the Dual Capacity Mill, the entire entry and exit equipment remains unchanged; as does the basic mill base and drive system.

The dual capacity of the mill is achieved by two sets of Quick Change subplates designed to mount on a single base system and utilize one drive system. In this instance one set of subplates with 3.500” shafts was designed for producing tubing from 1.250” to 5.000” and a second set of subplates with 6.000” shafts was designed to produce tubing from 2.500” to 8.000” diameter. The distance between the stands is optimized for the diameter of tubing produced on each set of subplates. As with all quick change systems, one set of subplates is in production while the second set of subplates is available for change-over. This mill produces standard mechanical rounds as well as hollow structural shapes.

This mill is designed to utilize the customer’s overhead crane to change over the subplates. The subplates are held to the base by a hydraulic clamping system. This allows the subplates to be connected and disconnected from the base quickly and efficiently.

T&H Lemont has recently signed a contract to supply a second Dual Capacity High Frequency Quick Change Welded Tube Mill to produce API products. The over all size range for this mill is .750” to 4.500” diameters.

T&H Lemont is always exploring new technologies and innovations to reduce customer’s production costs and improve productivity, not only for the welded tube and pipe industries, but the roll-forming industry, as well. T&H Lemont has provided technologies to produce products such as stainless steel hypodermic needles, communication cables, flexible tubular products, Hi-strength welded and roll-formed shapes and large diameter API pipe.

In addition to complete production systems, T&H Lemont provides a variety of components and services to the tube, pipe and roll-forming industries. Services include tube and pipe roll design and manufacturing, mill alignment and operational consulting. Components offered by T&H Lemont include, but are not limited to welders, cut-offs, entry equipment, accumulators, pre-punch, post-punch, seam orientation stands, weld boxes, edge conditioner, bead scarfing systems, straightening systems, single point adjustment systems, dedimplers, blades, jaws, roll shafts and much more.

T&H Lemont Announces Development of New Size Seam Orientation Stand

NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Dissemination

July 2008

Chicago, Il---T&H Lemont is proud to announce the development of a new size of Seam Orientation Stand.  The purpose of the Seam Orientation Stand is to orient the weld seam in welded hollow structural shape tubes.  The unit is installed prior to the sizing/shaping section of the mill.  The Seam Orientation Stand can aid in either maintaining the weld seam at “top-dead center” or moving the weld seam to anywhere between the 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock position on the mother tube prior to shaping.  Moving the weld seam in the mother tube results in the weld seam being offset in the welded shape.

New Seam Orientation Stand

The movement of the weld seam is accomplished using a pair of rolls mounted in roll clevises.   Within the unit, the two roll and clevis assemblies are mounted opposite each other. During the welding process the roll and clevis assemblies rotate in opposition to each other, thus causing the weld seam to be moved to the desired location.  The rotation of the tooling assemblies is completely motorized.  The controls for the unit can be mounted independently near the unit or installed at the cut-off operating station.
The new Seam Orientation Stand is designed to handle mother tubes as large as 12.750” (325mm) and as small as 3.000” (75mm).  While a separate pair of rolls is recommended for each weld size, the impact of the tooling is reduced by the utilization of three sizes of roll clevises.  The different sizes of clevises allow the roll tooling to be optimized for the mother tube, reducing tooling costs and maximizing the efficiency of the unit.
